Why Hire A Plumber After Moving Into An Older Home

Have you recently purchased and older home? If so, you may have concerns about certain aspects of the home that you want to inspect. It can be worth it to hire a plumber to do the following things for you as a new homeowner of an older home.

Pipe Inspection

Older homes are not always up to code when it comes to the pipes and connections used to join everything together. A plumber is going to look at the pipes and make sure that everything is in good shape.

A common problem that you can run into are places where newer copper pipes connect to older, galvanized pipes. These joints need to be made with a dielectric fitting, which prevents corrosion from happening to the copper pipe. If you leave the joint as is, that corrosion can even cause a pipe to burst unexpectedly. Thankfully, it's an easy fix to remove the corroded part of the pipe and install a new dielectric fitting.

Pipe replacement may even be recommended if you have old galvanized plumbing that is rusting on the inside.

Sewer Pipe Inspection

Chances are high that the previous owner had no idea what the state of their sewer piping was when they sold the house. It's a good idea to get an understanding of what you are dealing with so you can be prepared for the future.

Your plumber will use a sewer camera in the main cleanout pipe to see what issues could be problematic to you in the main sewer line. This includes telling you what material the pipe is made out of and if they see issues with tree roots. Tree roots will probably be a recurring issue that you'll need to deal with by hiring a plumber to use a sewer snake to clear them out. The plumber can even take care of this problem the same day if they brought the sewer snake equipment with them.

Water Heater Inspection

Water heaters are appliances that do not last forever. The time will come when they eventually need to be replaced. A plumber can give you an update on the state of your water heater to let you know what kind of maintenance it needs or if replacement is in its near future. At the very least, knowing the age of the water heater can give you a good idea of how many years you have left before replacement is necessary.
