If you have a clog in your drain, water may slowly drain, or it may not drain away at all. When this occurs, most people are quick to reach for chemical drain cleaners. However, while effective at removing many types of clogs, chemical drain cleaners can take a toll on your pipes. And if the clog isn't cleared, it is a hazard if you have to bring in a plumber to clear the clog. Fortunately, there are many alternatives to clearing a clog. Here are three liquids that you likely already have on hand that can be effective at clearing a clog in your drain.
1. Hot Water
One of the most underrated ways to free a clog from your drain is to simply pour a pot of boiling hot water down the drain. When you pour the hot water directly down the drain, the hot water melts any grease or soap residue that may be causing the clog or holding the clog together. It also helps to flush the grease or soap residue down the drain before it has a chance to harden. In addition to using hot water to remove clogs, boiling hot water can be poured down drains monthly to help prevent clogs from forming in the first place.
Vinegar is an acidic liquid. When a clog is present, pouring one cup of vinegar down the drain may help to free the clog. Allow the vinegar to sit in place for at least an hour before flushing water down the line. This helps the acid in the vinegar eat through any clogs that may be present. In needed, repeat. If you are in a hurry to free the clog, sprinkle a tablespoon or two of baking soda down the drain before pouring the vinegar down. When the vinegar hits the baking soda, the combination will create a fizzing action that can help to break up clogs.
3. Cola Soda
The last liquid that may help to clear a clog in your drain is cola soda, such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Cola sodas are acidic in nature. Just like vinegar, they can eat through clogs when allowed to sit for at least an hour. But in addition to the acidity, the carbonation in the soda also helps to slowly break away clogs as the soda sits against it. Pour about half a can of soda down the drain to use cola to rid yourself of drain clogs.
If you have tried one or more of these methods and the clog still is not budging, it is time to call a professional. A plumber may be needed to perform a service called drain cleaning. Drain cleaning consists of blasting pressurized water through your pipes to help remove blockages and clogs.
