Ridding Yourself Of A Clogged Drain

Blog

It can be extremely frustrating to have a clogged sink or drain. The problem is that there are many different ways that they can arise. A clog can come from something being put down the drain that does not belong, or it can come from mineral buildup. No matter what the cause of the problem, it needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. Many people do not really know how to take care of a clogged drain. Here are a few steps that you can follow to help you get rid of that pesky clogged drain.

Drain Cleaners

One of the first things that you should reach for is a liquid drain cleaner. These cleaners are engineered to get rid of a clogged drain extremely quick. Liquid drain cleaners are made from chemicals that are extremely basic, so they have a PH that is higher than 7. This means that the chemicals accept and absorb hydrogen ions. This causes the material to become much more malleable and it will usually go down the drain. Just a word of caution, if you have a septic system skip this step. The chemicals can kill the bacteria in your septic system.

Pipe Snake

Another extremely effective way to rid yourself of a clog is to use a pipe snake. These are strong cables that can be pushed down the drain to physically dislodge the clog from the walls of the drain. The snakes come in different lengths and sizes. If you have a straight shot to your clog you may want to use a thicker pipe snake. However, if the path to the clog is extremely tortuous then you will want to use a thinner pipes snake. This allows the pipe snake to be more maneuverable.

Call A Plumber

The problem with a clogged sink or drain is that they are not always what they seem to be. If you have gone through the first two steps then it may be time to call a plumber. A plumber will attach a camera onto a pipe snake or auger and put it down the drain so they can see exactly what is clogging your drain. Even if the pipe is kinked or collapsed the plumber will then be able to make a plan and fix the problem. If you have gone through the first two steps the likelihood of you unclogging the drain are very small.
